America's State Birds - Alaska

Willow Ptarmigan

Lagopus Lagopus

The Willow Ptarmigan became the official bird of Alaska in 1955. It beat the Stellar's Jay and Raven in a vote.

The Willow Ptarmigan has two distinct looks. In the winter it is mostly or completely white so that it blends in with the cold Alaska snow. The rest of the year it has more brown and black feathers that allow it to hide within the rocks.
